Bitcoin's (BTC) slide to as low as $60,233 overnight, before recovering somewhat to $65,443, has left most of the largest pure-play Bitcoin treasury companies deeply underwater on their holdings, with combined unrealized losses approaching $10 billion across eight entities that collectively control more than 850,000 BTC. The reckoning hits hardest at the top. Strategy, formerly […]

The latest downturn in Bitcoin (BTC) has begun to weigh heavily on publicly listed companies that built their balance sheets around the market’s leading cryptocurrency. On Thursday, Bitcoin hovered near the $65,000 level, continuing the sharp decline that began last October. This has impacted equity markets, causing the shares of crypto-exposed firms to decline significantly. Bitcoin Slide Pressures Digital Asset Treasury Firms According to a Reuters report, the renewed volatility in digital assets is dragging down the stock prices of companies that hold Bitcoin and other tokens, raising concerns that the stress could spread more broadly across the sector.  The number of publicly traded firms investing in cryptocurrencies surged last year, as many executives bet that digital assets would continue to appreciate over the long-term.  Related Reading: Bitcoin Crashes Below $67,000 As Stifel Warns Of Potential Drop To $38,000 However, the backdrop has shifted. Investor anxiety over stretched valuations in artificial intelligence (AI) stocks, combined with uncertainty surrounding the future path of Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate cuts, has weighed on risk assets more broadly.  As a result, Bitcoin has slid to its lowest level since October 2024, putting pressure on companies whose business models rely on holding digital assets. Many of these digital asset treasury firms saw their shares wobble sharply on Thursday. Seven Major Companies Suffer  Strategy (previously MicroStrategy), the largest corporate BTC holder with over 700,000 coins, has been among the hardest hit. Its shares have fallen from around $457 in July to as low as $106 on Thursday.  In December, the company cut its 2025 earnings outlook, pointing to weakness in Bitcoin prices, and announced plans to establish a reserve to help support dividend payments.  The firm led by Michael Saylor said it now expects its full‑year results to range anywhere from a $6.3 billion profit to a $5.5 billion loss, a sharp downgrade from its earlier forecast of a $24 billion net profit. Related Reading: Ripple Throws Weight Behind Hyperliquid, Fueling HYPE’s Rally Toward Crucial Levels Other Bitcoin‑focused firms also felt the impact. Shares of the UK‑based Smarter Web Company fell nearly 18% on Thursday. Rival Bitcoin buyers Nakamoto Inc and Japan’s Metaplanet were also under pressure, dropping almost 9% and more than 7%, respectively. However, the sell-off pressure has not been limited to companies holding only BTC. On Thursday, crypto-related firms that stockpiled other digital tokens also traded lower amid the correction affecting broader digital asset prices.  Alt5 Sigma, which announced last year that it would accumulate the Trump family’s World Liberty Financial (WLFI) token, saw its shares drop 8.4%. Similarly, SharpLink Gaming, which holds Ethereum (ETH), declined about 8%, while Forward Industries, a holder of Solana (SOL), slid nearly 6%. Bitcoin treasuries are designed to look uncomfortable in drawdowns, because the trade they're running is simple: take a volatile asset, put it on a corporate balance sheet, and finance more of it through capital markets. Ethereum’s momentum in institutional markets just hit a major roadblock. After months of enthusiasm surrounding spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs), new data has shown that ETF flows have sunk to their worst monthly total since their launch. The sharp drop reflects a broader cooldown in investor demand, as market volatility and shifting risk appetite weigh on crypto allocations. Will Staking ETFs Emerge To Stabilize Flows? In an X post, a crypto analyst known as Milk Road revealed that the Ethereum ETFs had just printed their worst month on record since launch, which is roughly $1.4 billion in net outflows, the largest single-month withdrawal that ETH has ever encountered.  Related Reading: Ethereum Shows Signs Of Accumulation As CVD Strengthens And Correlation Stays Elevated Historically, ETF flow reversals tell more about liquidity pressure in the broader financial system than the long-term fundamentals of the asset itself. When redemptions spike this hard, it’s usually a sign that broader risk sentiment is cracking, not that the asset itself broke. Meanwhile, most investors don’t know that while ETFs were handing back, Digital Asset Treasuries (DATs) stepped in as aggressive buyers. BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR) quietly added over 300,000 ETH, worth nearly $800 million at the time, to its treasuries. If the ETF outflow continues to accelerate, the near-term price action will remain choppy as liquidity gets strained at the edges. However, if DAT inflows continue scaling, it builds the foundation for a tighter supply setup into 2026. The tension between this panicked short-term selling pressure and the quiet structural long-term accumulation is the most important dynamic for positioning. Why ETH Reserves Are Becoming Strategic Corporate Assets Crypto trader Bull Theory has noted that last week, BitMine bought an astonishing 138,452 ETH, worth $437.7 million. This single transaction solidifies their position as the largest ETH treasury in the world, holding 3.86 million ETH, valued at $12.4 billion and accounting for 3.2% of the entire circulating supply. Related Reading: Here’s Why Ethereum Emerges As The Global Capital Rails For On-Chain Finance The true source of rising ETH demand is that Wall Street is quietly building on ETH. BlackRock, with $13.5 trillion AUM, has launched tokenized funds on ETH and has filed for a staked ETH ETF. JPMorgan, with $4 trillion, Deutsche Bank, with $1.1 trillion, and Standard Chartered, with $800 billion, are developing tokenization and DeFi infrastructure using ETH and its Layer-2 networks.  Institutions like Amundi, HSBC, BNY Mellon, Coinbase, Kraken, and Robinhood are all using ETH rails for custody and settlement or rollup infrastructure for scaling and security. Furthermore, large companies are now holding and staking ETH for yield. BitMine alone expects to generate $400 million+ a year in staking revenue from its position.  Tom Lee believes that as staking demand grows and institutions scale tokenization increases, ETH could reach $12,000 in 2026. “A Bitcoin miner is now the largest Ethereum whale, Wall Street is building on ETH, and treasuries are shifting toward yield. ETH is quickly becoming part of the Global Financial System.” Bull Theory noted. Featured image from Freepik, chart from Tradingview.com

Throughout the past year, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) have emerged as the primary focus for a growing trend of Digital Asset Treasuries (DATs), particularly driven by favorable pro-crypto regulations worldwide. However, recent reports from Reuters indicate that this focus is beginning to shift towards less popular altcoins.  DAT Firms Explore New Opportunities Beyond Bitcoin  As of September, there are at least 200 DAT companies, predominantly concentrating on Bitcoin, with a combined market capitalization of approximately $150 billion. This figure reflects a more than threefold increase from the previous year.  New companies are launching daily, many of which are penny stocks looking for avenues to enhance profits. Yet, as Bitcoin’s value declines, these firms are increasingly turning to new tokens in hopes of achieving greater returns. Related Reading: Ethereum (ETH) Holds Strong as Analysts Target $4,400 Despite ETF Outflows In recent weeks, companies such as Greenlane, OceanPal, and Tharimmune have announced plans to acquire tokens like Berachain (BERA), Near protocol (NEAR), and Canton Coin (CC), respectively.  Peter Chung, head of research at crypto-focused Presto Research, noted that while the initial hype surrounding DATs has diminished, there remains potential for a resurgence.  In a recent interview with Reuters, an OceanPal representative stated that their acquisition of NEAR tokens was intended to leverage the asset’s integrated artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. Retail Investors Lose $17 Billion In Crypto Treasuries Earlier in the year, many digital asset treasury companies traded at a premium to their crypto holdings as investors believed these firms could leverage credit to acquire more tokens.  However, with Bitcoin’s recent struggles and an influx of Strategy (previously MicroStrategy) imitators, some companies are beginning to falter. Reuters indicates that at least 15 Bitcoin treasury companies were trading below the net asset value of their tokens as of last Friday. Retail investors, significant buyers of high-profile Bitcoin treasury companies, reportedly lost around $17 billion on these trades, according to estimates from Singapore-based 10x Research.  Additionally, digital asset treasuries focusing on other leading cryptocurrencies are also facing challenges; ETHZilla and Forward Industries have recently approved share repurchases, a strategy typically employed to support share prices. Related Reading: Dogecoin Price Could See 4,440% Rally To $5 If This Macro Cycle Repeats Despite the potential for higher gains, analysts warn of the risks associated with this strategy. Cristiano Ventricelli, vice president and senior analyst of digital assets at Moody’s Ratings, cautioned that expanding into “exotic” and less liquid cryptocurrencies could significantly heighten risk.  According to Ventricelli, when market conditions worsen, companies that invest in these assets face greater pressure on their equity. Michael O’Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading, also expressed concern that most digital asset treasury companies may ultimately trade at a discount to their digital assets.  Featured image from DALL-E, chart from TradingView.com

The concept of a price battleground in Bitcoin markets refers to a critical price range where the forces of buying and selling pressure are in a fierce and decisive contest. This is where the outcome is expected to determine BTC’s overall direction and confirm a continuation of a bull market or bear market correction. Why This Zone Will Define Bitcoin’s Next Expansion Phase In an X post, an institutional-grade reporter, Bitcoin Vector, has highlighted that BTC has entered its decisive battleground between $110,000 and $115,000, which could determine the trajectory of the entire cycle. In the past week, spot demand, which is the engine of sustained rallies, was notably weak and capped by the escalating US-China trade tensions. Related Reading: Bitcoin Enters ‘Disbelief Phase’ – Could Short Sellers Face The Next Squeeze? As those tensions eased, that spot demand showed signs of returning, allowing BTC to claw its way back above the critical $110,000 level. Despite recovery back into the battleground, momentum remains negative and flat. Without sustained inflow and spot demand, the bullish structure could fade fast, leaving BTC exposed to another pullback. However, if demand holds and momentum turns up, BTC advances deeper into the battleground. A failure to maintain this range and BTC may risk retreating again and raising the white flag. A full-time crypto trader, Sykodelic, has also offered a highly optimistic prediction that Bitcoin will be back to an All-Time High (ATH) by the end of the month. The market is still in uncertainty and fear, where BTC thrives for its next leg higher. This is the stage of the cycle where disbelief dominates. As a result, traders convince themselves the rally is over, and that’s when BTC starts to move again. By the time BTC approaches its previous highs, traders will finally believe again, which often happens when another long flush clears out late entrants. Technically, BTC price is moving back above the 4-hour 50-period Simple Moving Average (SMA). Each time, Bitcoin successfully retests this level as support, the price continues to expand higher. “I think the worst is behind us,” Sykodelic noted. The Supply Battle That Shapes The Next Cycle The current Bitcoin market is in a supply tug-of-war between two powerful forces. According to the ambassador of MGBX_EN, BitBull, long-term holders (LTHs) have been constantly offloading their coins, while institutions are aggressively absorbing the supply through Spot ETFs and Digital Asset Treasuries (DATs).  Related Reading: Bitcoin Profit-Taking Hits $2.25 Billion Following Market Crash — What Could This Mean? Meanwhile, the treasury holdings have quietly surpassed $120 billion, with BTC still dominating the stack. Spot ETFs alone have absorbed tens of thousands of coins this quarter, proving that institutional demand remains strong. However, LTHs are still selling faster than ETFs, and DATs can absorb. Historically, when this kind of accelerated LTH distribution occurs, BTC tends to lose short-term momentum.  This is not a bearish setup, but it does imply that the upside remains temporarily capped until the selling pressure fades. Thus, institutions are buying the strength, not the bottoms. Ultimately, the next major breakout hinges on when long-term holders stop distributing and return to accumulation mode.
